Smith College opened in 1875 with small cottages as living spaces for\u00a0students and a single academic building, College Hall. This organization was\u00a0intended to avoid the expense and social pressures associated with\u00a0congregate dormitories\u00a0as experienced at Vassar and Wellesley. The cottage\u00a0system<\/a><\/strong> also promoted a domestic identity for female students in order to\u00a0preserve nineteenth-century values of femininity. At Smith, College Hall\u00a0housed the mostly male faculty and administration, serving as a patriarchal\u00a0presence watching over the domestic cottages. Taylor Hall\u00a0was\u00a0designed to\u00a0guard over Merion in a similar way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
